Millennials, 18-33 year olds, according to the Pew poll, are the first adults who grew up in the digital world. They did not have to adapt to it. They are less attached to organized religion or politics and distrustful of people. And only 26% of them are married. That’s probably why they have so much time to be online!
Millennials do connect to other people, but it is not what we call human contact. They form their own groups online,on social media. They can choose to be part of it at anytime or log off anytime. Gamers talk to people online all over the world. They collaborate to change the codes in the game!
When I was writing my novel ‘Hand of Fatima’ a thriller about terrorism, half the characters are Millennials and the other half Baby Boomers. Together they tried to expose a cover-up about a raid in Helmond Province, Afghanistan. There were a lot of smart, powerful people in Washington who wanted it buried. But it was the Millennials who outsmarted them. They understood how information travels better than the Boomers.
I don’t want to give a way the end of the ‘Hand of Fatima’ because it is on Amazon.com and you can read it yourself.
But this poll has implications for the next election and it is important that we reach them. They are socially liberal. They believe in abortion, gay marriage and legal pot. So that sounds like disaster for the right.
But if you look deeper they are libertarian in that they want internet freedom and are against NSA spying. The pot and gay marriage issues are based on libertarian freedom not lack of religion. Although they don’t like being attached to religion, about 85% believe in God.
Cadillac may have the last laugh on this poll. They put out a TV ad that glorified hard work and capitalism. It showed a guy walking around his pool and then getting in his new Cadillac in front of his beautiful house. He makes fun of the work habits of people in other contries. He actually smirks when he says we Americans only take two weeks off a year while others take a whole month off. That’s why Americans are successful.
According the Cadillac, young consumers on YouTube loved this ad 3-1! That makes me smile. Because Millennials say they have enough money to get along, but they have high hopes for the future. It seems they realize that will involve hard work and capitalism! And we will have to learn to reach them online.
