The Russian Bear is growling again. The brown bear has been the symbol of Russia since the 17th Century. Since the Tsarist times, through the Soviet Union and now the Russian Federation the bear is still fierce, threatening and in the forest ready to strike.
But President Obama and Secretary of State Kerry don’t seem to understand that the bear is dangerous. Kerry was practically in tears when Putin used force to take over Crimea. He actually said at a press conference that he didn’t understand why Putin didn’t go to the UN or other international organization before using force! He could have asked for a vote.
I wanted to laugh at the Secretary of State. Is he stupid or just tied to an ideology that values ‘conflict resolution’. Someone in the State Department has to tell him that ‘conflict resolution’ doesn’t work with an adversary who values the conflict part!. The bear doesn’t care about the international community. It only cares about getting what it wants and swallowing it!
It made me miss Ronald Reagan. He really understood the Russian Bear. His 1984 campaign put out one of the most memorable political ad of all times. It was written and narrated by Hal Riney. It was the height of the Cold War and Reagan was tough on the communists. He understood them. He kept the military strong because he knew the bear only respected strength.

The text of the ad is eerie to read when you think about Putin annexing Crimea and Obama wanting to cut the military.
“There is a bear in the woods. For some people, the bear is easy to see. Others don’t see it at all. Some people say the bear is tame. Others say it is vicious and dangerous. Since no one can really be sure who’s right, isn’t it smart to be as strong as the bear? If there is a bear.”
President Obama seemed mystified that Putin used force and just took Crimea. How uncivilized!
I wouldn’t want to be in the forest with Obama……and the bear! If there is a bear.
